Softener sizing calculator

Water Softener Sizing Calculator

Calculate a water softener working-capacity target from hardness and household water use, with a disclosed formula, reserve assumptions and exact-model checks.

Guided calculator

Water-softener sizing calculator

Use a hardness test result from anywhere, or choose an available Houston-area public water-system result as a starting point. Then add recent water use or household size.

Before you start

Start with hardness evidence and recent water use

1. Find a hardness result

Use a current untreated-water test when possible. Houston-area users can also identify the utility or system shown on the bill.

Public reports are context, not a tap measurement.
2. Find recent water usage

Use the consumption number and billing dates—not the dollar amount. If you do not have a bill, household size provides a rough estimate.

We convert common bill units for you.
1 Choose the home’s water source
I have a number, but I do not know which unit it uses

Choose gpg only when the result says “gpg,” “grains/gal,” or “grains per gallon.”

Choose mg/L or ppm when the result says “mg/L,” “ppm,” or “ppm as CaCO₃.” Utility and laboratory reports commonly use this form.

If no unit appears, do not calculate from that number. Check the report legend or ask whoever performed the test.

Need help reading a hardness result or converting units? Use the hardness measurement and conversion guide.

Can’t find the supplier? Use the Houston-area water-quality research or choose “Use my own test result.” Published system results are a starting point, not a promise of today’s hardness at the home.

2 Tell us how much water the household uses

Choose the option that matches what you have. A bill is usually more reliable than a household-size estimate.

Does irrigation, a pool, or another branch bypass the softener?

Leave this at 100% if nearly all entered usage will pass through the softener. Lower it only when you can reasonably separate bypassed use.

Calculation assumptions Example assumptions: 7 service days + 1 reserve day

The starting values of 7 service days and 1 reserve day are editable example assumptions, not a universal regeneration schedule. Adjust them for the planning scenario; exact valve programming and reserve logic control the installed system. For the full sizing method, read the water-softener sizing guide.

Optional water-chemistry and proposed-model check

Water chemistry flags

These values trigger a review warning only. The tool never applies an unsupported universal “compensated hardness” factor.

Proposed model documentation

What the sizing result means

The result is a minimum usable working-capacity target for the entered hardness load, service window and reserve. It is not a nominal marketing size. Compare it with the exact model’s documented working capacity at the proposed salt dose and verify rated service flow, pressure drop, regeneration requirements and installation conditions.

Formula and input boundaries

The calculator converts hardness reported in mg/L as calcium carbonate to grains per gallon using 17.118 mg/L per grain per gallon. Daily hardness load equals hardness in grains per gallon multiplied by the estimated gallons per day that actually pass through the softener. The working-capacity target adds the chosen service days and reserve days. The displayed 7-day service window and 1-day reserve are editable example assumptions, not a universal regeneration schedule or safety factor.

Use a current untreated-water test where possible. A public water-system report is context, not proof of the hardness at a specific tap today. Iron and manganese trigger a review warning but do not receive an invented universal compensation factor.

What to verify before purchase

  • exact certified model and configuration;
  • usable capacity at the quoted salt dose, not only nominal grain size;
  • rated service flow and pressure loss at the home’s peak demand;
  • source-water chemistry, drain, power, bypass and plumbing conditions;
  • salt, water, maintenance and service requirements.

Check the hardness measurement and conversion guide for units, the grain-capacity guide for interpreting documented working capacity, and the water-softener sizing method for the full calculation boundary. Continue with the water-softener research hub or compare long-term cost assumptions in the water-softener cost guide.

Decision boundary

A calculated result is a shortlist input, not an installation design.

Verify the water evidence, exact product documentation, pressure and plumbing conditions, and current ownership terms before selection.
