Direct answer: For a Gemline softener that matches the documented NuGen Fusion XT family, use the Fusion XT installation and owner manual. It covers XT-48, XT-60, XT-70, XT-70ER, XT-90 and XT-32C. Start by matching the model and controller: the first five use a CLOCK button in the reviewed instructions, while the XT-32C uses SET CLOCK. The factory hardness value is not a substitute for a water test, and salt dose, capacity and cycle programming should be checked by the installer.
Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not Gemline/NuGen support or an authorized technician. This guide interprets a manufacturer manual dated May 10, 2012, checked October 7, 2026. Follow the instructions supplied for your installed unit if its model, buttons or controller differ.
Download the correct manual and check the label
Open the NuGen Fusion XT manual (PDF). The document is authored by NuGen and hosted by Shilo Plumbing; it is not Shilo’s own troubleshooting specification. The current Shilo manual-download page links this copy. An older search result may point to a retired upload address.
The Gemline brochure associates the GEMLINE-48 and GEMLINE-60 names with Fusion XT-48 and XT-60. Still, a brand decal alone does not establish the control version. Photograph the complete equipment label, model, serial number and button layout. Ask the original installer for the matched manual if you cannot establish the match.
Keep three items together: the manual, your water-test results and the installer’s settings sheet. That is more useful for future service than a photo of the brand logo alone. Our Gemline brand guide separates these softeners from the brand’s filter and RO families.
Find the right page before pressing buttons
| Task | Printed page in the reviewed manual | What to match |
|---|---|---|
| Set the time of day | 8 | CLOCK for XT-48/60/70/70ER/90; SET CLOCK for XT-32C |
| Review installer settings | 9 or 10 | Page 9 for the first five models; page 10 for XT-32C |
| Read normal displays | 11 | The available displays differ by controller |
| Understand scheduled or immediate regeneration | 12 | REGEN behavior and the salt-restoration wait |
| Investigate hard water or regeneration problems | 14–17 | Match the actual symptom rather than reset everything |
| Compare capacity at a salt dose | 33–34 | Exact model and performance row |
The manual date belongs to the document, not to your installation. These page references should not be transferred to a different Fusion, ExStream or replacement controller manual.
Set the clock on a matching controller
For XT-48, XT-60, XT-70, XT-70ER and XT-90, manual page 8 starts with CLOCK. For XT-32C it starts with SET CLOCK. Use the arrow buttons for the hour, check AM/PM, press NEXT for minutes, then NEXT to finish. A clock correction changes timekeeping; it does not correct an incorrect hardness or capacity setting.
Before making the change, photograph the display and note whether the clock was wrong after a power interruption. If the clock keeps losing time, record when it happens and have the power supply/control checked rather than repeatedly reprogramming the system.
Hardness, day override and regeneration time
On the matched controllers, the manual enters installer display settings with NEXT and the up arrow held together for three seconds. This menu contains hardness, day override and regeneration time. Record the existing values before changing anything; an unfamiliar display is a reason to stop and confirm the controller, not to try another brand’s key sequence.
| Value to discuss with the installer | Documented meaning | What your record should contain |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness | Grains per gallon as calcium carbonate; the manual’s default is 20 | Actual test result, units, date and any installer-approved correction |
| Day override | A maximum interval in a metered configuration; page 9 shows a factory default of 14 days | Whether the controller is metered and why this interval was selected |
| Regeneration time | Scheduled start time; the reviewed default is 2:00 a.m. | Current household low-use period and correct AM/PM |
20 gpg is a factory starting value, not a measured result for your home. If your result uses different units, our water hardness calculator helps with the conversion. Let the installer determine any adjustment for iron or other chemistry; this guide does not supply an iron-compensation formula.
Day override is also not necessarily the frequency you will observe. A metered softener can call for regeneration sooner as its programmed capacity is used. The XT-32C instructions describe how day override depends on the gallon-capacity setting, so its behavior should be confirmed from that model’s page.
The manual says cycle times, salt dose, exchange capacity and refill time are manufacturer presets. Do not copy those values from a larger model or an online screenshot. The XT-48 vs XT-60 comparison shows why the salt dose and capacity must stay paired.
Scheduled regeneration versus immediate regeneration
Manual page 12 distinguishes a brief press-and-release of REGEN, which schedules a cycle for the preset time, from holding it for three seconds, which starts immediately. The scheduled request can be cancelled with another brief press; the immediate request cannot be cancelled through that request procedure. An immediate cycle should be allowed to finish rather than skipped through as a homeowner test.
If the brine tank had no salt, the reviewed manual says to add salt and wait at least two hours before regeneration. Its page 33 recommends pelletized sodium chloride. This is not an instruction to force regeneration when the tank is overflowing, the drain is blocked or the control is faulting.
The manual also explains that water demanded during regeneration is untreated. Schedule a routine cycle when the home needs less water. If the system repeatedly supplies hard water between cycles, use the Gemline not-softening guide instead of adding repeated manual cycles without finding the cause.
Save a settings and service record
Copy this checklist into the record you keep beside the manual:
- Model, serial number, controller/button photo and manual revision.
- Feed-water hardness, units, test date and other relevant water results.
- Current hardness setting, day override and regeneration time.
- Installer-confirmed salt dose, capacity, reserve and cycle configuration.
- Date of any change, why it was made, and the treated-water result afterward.
- Service company, who made the adjustment and the next review date.
A useful service request says, “This XT-48 showed this reading at this faucet after this cycle,” rather than “The water feels wrong.” The softener service guide helps prepare that conversation. Internal valve parts, wiring, chemical cleaning and installer-level programming belong with someone qualified to service the actual configuration.
Frequently asked questions
Which manual should I use for a Gemline Fusion XT softener?
Use the manual that matches the full model and controller on your equipment. The reviewed NuGen Fusion XT manual covers XT-48, XT-60, XT-70, XT-70ER, XT-90 and XT-32C, but dates from May 10, 2012. A different control or configuration needs its own instructions.
What hardness setting should I put in my Gemline softener?
Use a measured hardness result in the units required by the matched controller, with any chemistry adjustment confirmed by your installer. The reviewed manual’s default of 20 grains per gallon is not a recommendation for every home.
What is the difference between pressing and holding REGEN?
In the reviewed manual, a brief press schedules regeneration for the preset time. Holding REGEN for three seconds starts immediately. A scheduled request can be cancelled with another brief press; the immediate request cannot be cancelled through that request procedure.
