Direct answer: Premier XP and Signature softeners regenerate in response to metered water use, rather than a universal daily schedule. Their manual regeneration procedures are different: the June 26, 2025 Premier XP manual describes advancing the valve screw until water flow begins, while the February 2024 Signature manual specifies its BRINE indicator position. Match the model and valve diagram before starting. After recovery from an empty salt tank, both manuals call for a second regeneration after the first finishes so both resin tanks are restored.
Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not Kinetico technical support. This guide compares the two manufacturer owner manuals reviewed October 7, 2026. It is not a universal procedure for Essential, older heads, filters, commercial equipment or the K5 RO drinking-water system. If the label or valve differs, obtain its own manual from your dealer.
Why regeneration can happen during the day
These softeners use moving water to power mechanical demand operation. A built-in meter responds to use; guests, laundry or a running toilet can change how often the unit regenerates. A household using very little water may go several days without a cycle. There is no single interval that every home should reach.
The twin-tank arrangement provides a treatment path while the other tank regenerates. On Premier XP models equipped with Overdrive, both tanks participate in normal service and one remains available during a cycle. Record the actual model rather than assuming every two-tank Kinetico has the same flow arrangement.
Daytime water noise by itself is not a fault. Increased frequency without a known rise in use is a reason to check household leaks and keep a timing log. The Premier XP manual also recognizes that pressure may temporarily fall during regeneration. Persistent drain flow or poor measured softening deserves a separate service assessment.

Match the family, diagram and reason for starting
Photograph the model label and top of the valve. Compare it with the actual manual diagram before touching an actuator. The following differences are drawn from the reviewed editions, not a promise that every past model bearing these family names is identical.
| Reviewed family manual | Manual start described | Published cycle range | Setting boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premier XP, 16522E, June 26, 2025, page 14 | Press the softener valve screw with a #2 Phillips screwdriver; turn slowly clockwise until regeneration begins | 11–90 minutes, depending on model | The separate hardness-adjustment knob is for an authorized Kinetico service representative |
| Signature, 15066C, February 2024, page 7 | Press the valve screw with a #2 Phillips screwdriver; turn slowly clockwise to the diagram’s BRINE indicator position | 19–30 minutes, depending on model | Follow the model’s existing configuration; this is not a settings-calibration procedure |
The broad Premier XP range does not tell you the exact duration for your installed model. Ask the dealer for its expected cycle duration if you need a diagnostic reference. Do not transplant Signature’s BRINE position or click guidance to an XP valve simply because both use a screwdriver.
Both manuals describe manual recovery after the salt storage ran empty and was refilled. If the complaint is hard water with salt still present, start with the not-softening checks to document the symptom and bypass arrangement. A manual cycle is not a substitute for finding a recurring fault.
Premier XP: the June 26, 2025 owner procedure
Use this summary only when the model and valve match page 14 of manual 16522E and salt has been replenished as directed. Keep the manufacturer diagram open: it distinguishes the valve actuator from the hardness-adjustment knob.
- With a #2 Phillips screwdriver on the softener valve screw, press down firmly and turn slowly clockwise to initiate regeneration.
- Listen for water flow through the system. The manual uses the start of flow as the indication that the disc has advanced enough; it does not give a universal number of clicks or a BRINE-dot instruction for this XP procedure.
- Let the regeneration finish. The manual gives an 11–90-minute model-dependent range; wait for the cycle’s water flow to stop before proceeding.
- Repeat the manual-start procedure after that first cycle finishes, as the manual directs for restoring both resin tanks.
If the actuator cannot be identified, is stiff, or the unit fails to begin or progress normally, stop and contact the dealer. Do not force it or experiment with the separate hardness knob. The manual expressly reserves adjustment of that knob to an authorized service representative.

Signature: the February 2024 owner procedure
Use this summary only for equipment matching page 7 and Figure 3 of manual 15066C. After refilling an empty salt supply, the manual permits manual regeneration or waiting for automatic operation.
- Identify the softener valve screw and indicator dot shown in Figure 3.
- Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, press the screw down firmly and slowly turn clockwise until the indicator advances to the BRINE position. The manual describes hearing at least five clicks before reaching that position; the diagram’s position, rather than an arbitrary five-click stop, is the reference.
- Water should begin flowing through the system. Allow the cycle to finish; the published range is 19–30 minutes depending on the model.
- After that flow stops, repeat the procedure to restore both resin tanks.
If the valve or indicator does not match, do not improvise from another family’s instructions. A cycle that will not start or finish needs qualified service. Neither this guide nor the manual-start procedure identifies a particular internal part as defective.

Record a cycle without changing its settings
For a useful service log, write down the model, manual revision, reason for manual recovery, start time, time cycle flow stopped, and whether the second recovery cycle completed. Keep measured hardness results from a known treated cold-water outlet with that record. A water heater containing previously hard water may take longer to turn over, so distinguish its result from the cold-water treatment path.
Request service if the unit does not advance automatically as expected, flow continues abnormally, or the completed recovery sequence fails to restore measured softening. Tell the dealer whether the concern is cycle timing, hardness or pressure. Use the service guide to compare the proposed repair and the maintenance guide for general ownership tasks alongside the exact manual.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a Kinetico softener regenerate?
Premier XP and Signature regenerate in response to metered water use. Frequency depends on the installed configuration, feed water and demand; there is no universal daily or weekly schedule for every household.
Do all Kinetico softeners use five clicks to the BRINE position?
No. The reviewed Signature manual describes at least five clicks before its BRINE indicator position. The reviewed Premier XP manual instead describes clockwise advancement of the valve screw until regeneration flow begins. Match the exact model and diagram.
How long does manual regeneration take?
The reviewed Premier XP manual gives 11–90 minutes depending on model; Signature gives 19–30 minutes. These are family ranges, not an exact duration for every unit. Follow the matched manual and confirm the cycle has finished before repeating its recovery procedure.
Can I turn the XP hardness knob to make regeneration happen more often?
The Premier XP manual reserves hardness-knob adjustment to an authorized Kinetico service representative. Record feed-water hardness and cycle observations for the dealer instead of changing the setting as a trial repair.
