Direct answer: HALO’s installation guide for the HALO 5 is written for licensed contractors only, and the warranty is void unless a licensed contractor installs the system. The guide calls for a dry, level, non-freezing location. The system goes on the main line so it treats hot and cold water, downstream of any pressure regulator. It needs 25–80 psi (60 psi recommended), a 120-volt grounded outlet that is not switch-controlled, and a ¾-inch threaded drain. After plumbing, the installer fills and flushes the tank, forces two regenerations and programs the clock, regeneration time and days between cycles. Finally, every fixture should run for two minutes. HALO warns that skipping the forced regenerations leads to “gray water” complaints.
Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not HALO, a HALO dealer or an installer. This page summarizes HALO’s installation guide 68110751 Rev.3326 and related HALO documents reviewed October 8, 2026. It is a checklist for owners to confirm the installation, not do-it-yourself instructions. HALO’s guide says it is intended for licensed contractors.
Is HALO 5 a do-it-yourself install?
No. The last page of the installation guide states: “Installation guidelines are intended for the use of licensed contractors only.” The HALO 5 warranty makes it a condition: it is void if the product was not installed by a licensed contractor, not sold by a licensed contractor, or not activated online at halowater.com.
That makes the installer’s paperwork part of the product. Before installation day, read our HALO warranty guide.
HALO 5 site requirements
From the pre-installation section of the installation guide, page 3, and the spec sheet, page 2:
| Requirement | What HALO’s documents say |
|---|---|
| Location | Protected, dry, level and non-freezing, such as a garage or laundry room. In moderate climates it can go outdoors or be buried with at least 6 inches of clearance below the control valve. |
| Freezing | Neither the unit nor its connections, including the drain line, may ever be exposed to freezing temperatures. |
| Water pressure | Handles 25–80 psi; 60 psi recommended. The spec sheet says do not exceed 80 psi. |
| Water temperature | Cold water only (spec sheet). |
| Power | Standard 120-volt grounded outlet not controlled by a switch. The valve has a 15-foot cord, and an extension cord is allowed where codes permit. The spec sheet lists a 15-volt transformer. |
| Drain | ¾-inch threaded drain outlet; HALO recommends a matching PVC fitting. The drain is pressurized, so it may run slightly uphill. Follow local plumbing code. |
| Plumbing point | On the main line so the system treats all water entering the home, hot and cold. If there is a pressure regulator, install HALO downstream of it. |
| Water source | The spec sheet says the system is intended for municipal water. On a well, a current well water analysis must go to HALO or all warranties are void. |
The warranty adds its own limits: water pressure must be regulated between 40 and 80 psi, and pressure above 80 psi voids all warranties. Internal water temperature must stay between 33°F and 120°F, and influent chlorine must not exceed 1 mg/L. The installation guide’s 25 psi lower limit is therefore below the warranty’s 40 psi minimum. Ask the installer to measure static pressure and record it.
What does the installer do on installation day?
The guide’s overview says the system arrives fully assembled, with the media in the tank and the control valve attached. Its system installation section, page 4, then runs in this order:
- Set aside the HALO warranty, the valve installation and operation manual, and the HALO water tips brochure. These are to be left with the homeowner.
- Orient the system. Looking at the rear of the control valve, the inlet line always enters the left side of the bypass assembly. An arrow on top of the valve shows the flow direction.
- Shut off and drain the main, then cut in on the main line.
- Install a ball valve and hose bib on the outlet side of the unit, then solder the adapters on the inlet and outlet piping.
HALO says a typical installation takes no more than a few hours. Additional plumbing, drain or electrical work needs the appropriate tradesperson. Brass reducers may be needed.
Charging and flushing a new HALO 5
The charging steps on page 5 are what prevent carbon fines from reaching the house:
- With the bypass in “Bypass” and the main on, close the new ball valve and open the bypass intake side. The tank fills in under five minutes.
- Open the outlet side of the bypass halfway and check for leaks, then fully.
- Open the new hose bib and run water for 10 minutes or until it runs consistently clear.
- Close the hose bib and force a regeneration by pressing the up and down arrow buttons together. Water runs for 10 minutes.
- Repeat the flush and forced regeneration once more.
The spec sheet’s quick overview adds a final check: test for chlorine at the hose bib and at the kitchen sink to verify results (spec sheet, page 2). Ask the installer to show you that test and record the readings.
HALO 5 programming: clock, regeneration time and days between cycles
The quick reference programming guide is on pages 6–7. If the valve head does not match the guide’s picture, remove the weatherproof cover first.
| Step | Button action in the guide | Setting |
|---|---|---|
| Time of day | Hold SET for 5 seconds, then use the arrows; SET again for minutes | Current time; the display marks PM |
| Regeneration time | Hold SET and an arrow button together for 3 seconds until the display flashes | A time when little water is used |
| Days between cycles | Arrows, then SET | 11 days for one person; 9 for two or three; 7 for four or more, “unless otherwise requested by homeowner” |
| Verify cycle | Hold SET and an arrow for 3 seconds, release, repeat; select P7, then confirm 99 | The guide says to change a 7 to 99 if needed |
| Main screen | Arrows toggle time and days to next regeneration | Confirm the days match step 3 |
After programming, the guide calls it “essential” to force two regenerations, then run every fixture in the home for two minutes. If water is still cloudy, repeat both steps and clean carbon residue from fixtures. It warns that a customer who skips this “will likely complain about water quality and gray water” (page 7).
The guide does not explain what the P7 and 99 values control. Do not change them later without HALO or the installer. Our HALO 5 maintenance guide explains why the 7-, 9- and 11-day intervals sit alongside the weekly cycle described in HALO’s overview and FAQ.
What do E1 and E2 mean on a HALO 5?
The installation guide gives one instruction for either code (page 7): hold SET and an arrow button until you hear the gear recenter, then release. If you hold them and do not hear the motor move, the guide suggests disconnecting the motor and reinserting it. It says the motor’s inability to rotate could mean it is out of alignment. Motor work is for the installer or HALO service. Photograph the code and contact the company that installed the system. These HALO 5 codes are not the same as codes on other brands’ valves.
After installation: what to expect
- Water still tests hard. HALO 5 conditions hardness minerals with its HALO ION stage. It does not remove them. HALO’s FAQ answers “Will the water test soft after the system is installed?” with “NO.” For hardness removal, see our HALO 5 vs CK10 vs Hybrid comparison.
- Water heater flush. HALO’s FAQ says that in a home with four people, the water heater will need to be flushed of dissolved solids three to four months after installing a HALO 5 or any HALO solution with a HALO ION. HALO says this is because the ION dissolves existing scale.
- Recirculation loops. The warranty requires a secondary HALO ION on each recirculating loop if a recirculation pump is in use. See HALO ION sizes compared.
- Warranty activation. Activate online at halowater.com. The warranty is void without it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install a HALO 5 myself?
HALO’s installation guide states that it is intended for licensed contractors only, and the HALO 5 warranty is void if a licensed contractor did not install the system. Treat the guide as a checklist for the installation, not as do-it-yourself instructions.
What water pressure does a HALO 5 need?
The installation guide says HALO systems handle 25 to 80 psi, with 60 psi recommended. The warranty requires pressure regulated between 40 and 80 psi and says pressure above 80 psi voids all warranties.
How many days between regenerations should a HALO 5 be set to?
HALO’s programming guide recommends 11 days for one person, 9 days for two or three people and 7 days for four or more, unless the homeowner requests otherwise. Ask the installer which interval was set and why.
Why is my water gray or cloudy after a HALO 5 installation?
HALO’s guide says the installer must force two regenerations and run every fixture for two minutes after programming. If water stays cloudy, it says to repeat the process and clean carbon residue from fixtures, and it warns that skipping this step leads to gray-water complaints.
