HALO 5 Maintenance: What to Check on a Salt-Free System

HALO 5 needs no salt refills, but it backwashes and uses power. Understand the current manual, owner checks, model-specific gallon capacities and when to seek service.

Direct answer: A standalone HALO 5 does not need salt refills. It does need an operating controller, power and a drain for automatic backwashing. HALO markets it as maintenance-free, but that does not mean no backwash, unlimited media life or no response to leaks and changing water quality. Match the unit and controller to its manual, keep the installation records, and have the installer investigate a missed cycle, persistent drain flow or a return of the problem the filter was installed to address.

Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not a HALO dealer or service contractor. This guide uses current HALO documentation. It describes owner observations and service questions; valve repairs and commissioning belong with a qualified installer.

First identify whether you have HALO 5 alone

Check the model label and your invoice. H5-100, H5-125 and H5-150 are HALO 5 filtration and conditioning models. If a separate CK10 softener and brine tank were included, that softener has additional salt and service needs. A HALO Hybrid is also a different system. Use our HALO 5, CK10 and Hybrid comparison before applying instructions from one product to another.

The current HALO 5 installation guide depicts a controller with SET, up-arrow and down-arrow buttons. CK10 instructions using NEXT, SET CLOCK and REGEN are not instructions for that HALO 5 controller. If your head differs, send its photograph and model number to the installer for the matching manual.

Backwashing is part of normal operation

The current guide describes a ten-minute automatic cycle. Its programming section recommends the following spacing by household size:

Household in the current guide Days between cycles
One person 11
Two or three people 9
Four or more people 7

The guide’s overview and HALO’s FAQ describe weekly operation. The more detailed programming section allows the intervals above. Ask the installer which schedule was selected for your installation and why; this table is not a direction to overwrite existing settings. A HALO 5 backwash is not a salt-softener brine cycle.

A short owner observation record

This is our suggested record for spotting changes, not a manufacturer service schedule. Keep it with the installation invoice.

Record Why it helps
Model, serial number and controller photo Identifies the applicable manual and replacement parts
Current display and installed cycle schedule Lets the installer compare a complaint with the programmed operation
Approximate date and time of the last observed cycle Separates a missed cycle from a cycle that occurred while you were asleep
Any leaks, persistent drain flow or new pressure complaint Gives the service company a specific symptom to reproduce
Inlet and treated-water test results, test method and date Shows whether the filtration target has changed

After a power interruption, look at the display and check that the clock agrees with the actual time. Photograph an error rather than trying button combinations from another HALO model. Do not disconnect or obstruct the drain to stop a normal cycle; unexplained continuous discharge needs service.

Media life: gallons and water conditions matter

The 2026 HALO 5 spec sheet gives these capacities, based on chlorine reduction at 1 ppm incoming chlorine:

HALO 5 model Published capacity basis
H5-100 1,000,000 gallons
H5-125 1,500,000 gallons
H5-150 2,000,000 gallons

These are conditional filtration figures, not a guarantee that every tank lasts exactly ten years. HALO’s FAQ uses treated-water chlorine detection as an end-of-life indicator for H5-100. If taste or odor returns, record a matching inlet and outlet test and ask the installer to check the filtration stage. A hardness test answers a different question: HALO 5 leaves hardness minerals in the water.

Do not order a media replacement solely because a calendar anniversary arrives. Give the service company the age, model, water use and test results. Equally, do not dismiss a documented treatment failure merely because the tank is less than ten years old.

What the warranty does and does not settle

The current limited warranty has installation, registration and water-condition requirements. It provides one carbon-media package for a qualifying chlorine-related media failure within ten years, with freight and handling outside that promise; it does not promise to pay for repair or installation work. Contact HALO before warranty repairs or replacement.

Ask the installer for the warranty that applied when your unit was sold and a written breakdown of labor, media and other charges. HALO lists 800-591-0538 and [email protected] for service contact. Collecting model and symptom evidence first makes that conversation useful. Our HALO warranty guide compares the HALO 5 terms with HALO’s other products, and the HALO 5 installation guide lists the installation conditions those terms depend on.

For a system that appears not to soften water, use our HALO troubleshooting guide. For broader service questions, see the water softener service guide; a directory listing does not establish HALO authorization.

Frequently asked questions

Does HALO 5 need salt?

A standalone HALO 5 does not need salt. If your installation also includes a CK10 softener, the CK10 has separate salt and brine-tank requirements.

Does HALO 5 backwash if it is maintenance-free?

Yes. The current HALO 5 guide describes a ten-minute automatic backwash cycle. Its detailed programming section recommends 7, 9 or 11 days between cycles depending on household size; confirm your installed schedule with the installer.

Should I replace HALO 5 media every ten years?

Do not use age alone. HALO publishes model-specific gallon capacities based on incoming chlorine conditions and identifies treated-water chlorine as an H5-100 end-of-life indicator. Have the model, usage and test results evaluated before ordering media.

Can I use CK10 programming instructions on HALO 5?

No. The current HALO 5 guide depicts SET and arrow buttons, while CK10 uses a different control interface. Match the manual to the actual controller before changing anything.
