Direct answer: North Star water softeners are made by Water Channel Partners, 2805 Dodd Road, Suite 300, Eagan, Minnesota. The January 2026 manuals for the NSC22, NSC31 and NSC42 say “Manufactured and warranted by Water Channel Partners” and close the warranty with “This water softener is manufactured by Water Channel Partners.” North Star’s own website lists the same Eagan address and describes the brand as a Minnesota manufacturer founded in 1925 that sells only through plumbers, contractors and water-treatment professionals.
Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not North Star, Water Channel Partners or a North Star dealer. This page summarizes manufacturer documents reviewed October 15, 2026: the NSC22/NSC31 manual 7393624 and NSC42 manual 7393632 (both Rev. H, January 7, 2026) and northstarwater.com. Corporate ownership is covered in our North Star brand research, not repeated here.
What the North Star manuals print
The NSC22 and NSC31 manual cover reads “Manufactured and warranted by Water Channel Partners, 2805 Dodd Road, Suite 300, Eagan, MN 55121,” followed by document number 7393624 (Rev. H 1/7/26). The cover also says “Designed, Engineered & Assembled in the U.S.A.” The NSC42 manual carries the same statement with document number 7393632.
The statement repeats under each parts list, next to “To order repair parts, contact us at: [email protected]” (NSC31 manual, PDF page 25). The warranty page names “Warrantor: Water Channel Partners” and ends with “This water softener is manufactured by Water Channel Partners, 2805 Dodd Road, Suite 300, Eagan, MN 55121. Customer Information Telephone No. 1-800-972-0135” (NSC31 manual, PDF page 28).
North Star’s website footer lists the same address, 2805 Dodd Rd, Suite 300, Eagan, MN 55121, and the same 1-800-972-0135 number (About North Star). Unlike some licensed brands, there is no gap here between the brand’s address and the manufacturer of record.
What North Star says about itself
The About North Star page makes several manufacturing claims:
- North Star “is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of home water treatment solutions.”
- It “started in 1925,” “is based in Minnesota and has two manufacturing facilities — both located in the United States — which boast ISO 9001 certification.”
- “Since we manufacture 95 percent of all components in our systems, we maintain strict control over the quality of our finished products.”
- Its systems are “designed, manufactured and assembled in the USA,” with “no metallic parts that can fall victim to rust or corrosion.”
- It maintains “a dedicated U.S.-based customer service team.”
These are the company’s own statements. We have not audited the plants or the 95 percent figure. They are consistent with the manuals, which name a single Minnesota manufacturer and warrantor.
A wholesale-only brand
The biggest practical difference between North Star and retail softener brands is how it is sold. The residential softeners page describes North Star as “an equipment supplier that distributes exclusively to plumbers, contractors and industry professionals.” There is no online store or retail listing on the manufacturer’s site, and no published price.
For a homeowner, that means three things:
- Buying. You get a North Star softener through a plumber or water-treatment contractor, usually as part of an installed quote.
- Finding service. The servicer locator searches by ZIP code for plumbing and water-treatment companies that carry North Star.
- Warranty claims. The warranty tells owners to “contact your contractor” first if a defect occurs. Only if you cannot reach the contractor does it describe returning the part, freight prepaid, directly to the factory with a description of the problem, your name and address, the purchase date, model and serial numbers, and the selling contractor’s name and address.
The manuals’ own contact line reflects that channel. Where a retail manual would put a support phone number on the cover, the North Star manuals say “If you have any questions or concerns when installing, operating or maintaining your water softener, contact us at: [email protected] or visit www.northstarwater.com,” and repeat the email address at the foot of most pages. The 1-800-972-0135 customer information number appears on the warranty page. Keep the installing contractor’s details with the manual, because the warranty’s first step depends on them.
Our North Star ownership costs guide explains what to ask for in a contractor quote.
The same factory address as Rheem softeners
Water Channel Partners also manufactures the Rheem Preferred softeners sold at retail. The Rheem RHS32 manual prints the identical “Manufactured and warranted by Water Channel Partners, 2805 Dodd Road, Suite 300, Eagan, MN 55121.”
The valve hardware overlaps. Comparing parts lists, the North Star NSC31 and the Rheem RHS32, both 3/4-inch-valve models, share order numbers for the seal kit (7129716), nozzle and venturi kit (7398674), valve body (7082053), rotor and disc (7199232), motor, cam and gear kit (7397864), position switch (7030713) and 24V DC power supply (7351054). The 1-inch NSC42 shares the seal kit 7185487 and resin tank 7247996 with the Rheem RHS42. All four list resin 0502272.
The products still differ in ways that matter to an owner:
| Item | North Star NSC31 | Rheem RHS32 |
|---|---|---|
| Sales channel | Plumbers and contractors only | Retail (Home Depot, per Rheem’s site) |
| Parts warranty | 1 year all parts | 1 year parts and labor (5 with Rheem cleaner) |
| Control board warranty | 5 years (board and valve body) | 3 years (control board) |
| Tank warranty | 10 years | 10 years |
| Warranty contact | Selling contractor, then factory | 1-800-754-7027 |
Sources: NSC31 warranty and RHS32 warranty. Both warranties void coverage if aftermarket, used or non-manufacturer parts are installed, so a shared part number is not permission to mix sources. See our Rheem brand research for that brand’s side.
Which North Star softeners this covers
The North Star softener page lists eight softeners: the NSC22, NSC31 and NSC42 cabinet models, the NSCWC and Wi-Fi NSCWHC 2-in-1 softener and filtration systems, and the NST30ED, NST45ED1 and NST70ED1 two-tank models. We reviewed full manuals for the NSC22, NSC31 and NSC42 only, so the manufacturer and warranty wording quoted above is from those documents. Our North Star models comparison lists the published specifications for the cabinet and 2-in-1 models.
Why the maker matters
Knowing the manufacturer helps with three decisions:
- Certification lookups. The manuals carry NSF/ANSI 44 and CSA B483.1 certification statements. Look up the exact model under the manufacturer’s listing rather than assuming a brand-wide claim.
- Parts. Order by the manual’s part number through the contractor or [email protected]. The warranty excludes aftermarket parts.
- Support after a move. If the installing contractor is gone, the manual’s factory-return path and the 1-800-972-0135 customer information line are the documented routes.
Brand features versus manual features
North Star’s product pages and its manuals describe the same controller in different language. The NSC31 product page highlights AutoSense Technology, which “learns water usage patterns to optimize water use and regeneration frequency,” and reverse flow regeneration, which it calls “proven to be the most effective way to clean the resin bed.”
The manual uses certification language for the same behavior. Each softener has “a demand initiated regeneration (D.I.R.) feature that complies with specific performance specifications intended to minimize the amount of regenerant brine and water used,” and a variable salt dose that “is selected by the electronic controls at regeneration time based on the amount needed” (NSC31 manual, PDF page 3). The manual also states the limits of the ratings: efficiency is measured in NSF/ANSI 44 laboratory tests that “represent the maximum possible efficiency,” and operational efficiency after installation “is typically less.”
When a contractor quotes a North Star system, the rated numbers in the manual are the ones to compare with other brands. The product-page feature names are North Star’s marketing terms for the same functions.
Certification statements on the documents
The NSC22/NSC31 manual cover says the systems are “tested and certified by NSF International against NSF/ANSI Standard 44 for hardness reduction and efficiency, and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 372,” and “tested and certified by the Water Quality Association against CSA B483.1.” The North Star product pages for the NSC22, NSC31 and NSC42 list the same three standards. The NSCWC 2-in-1 product page adds NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine taste and odor and lists barium and radium 226/228 under its NSF/ANSI 44 claims.
Certification is model-specific. Our North Star brand research records which models appear in certifier listings and under what name.
