Direct answer: On a Gemline or NuGen Fusion XT softener, the error codes in the manufacturer’s manual all describe the control valve’s drive motor failing to reach a position. E1 (also shown as Err-1001 or Err-101) means the control cannot sense motor movement. E2 (Err-1002 or Err-102) means the motor ran too short and stalled before the next cycle position. E3 (Err-1003 or Err-103) means the motor ran too long and could not find the next cycle position. Err-1004 (Err-104) means the motor ran too long trying to reach its home position. None of these codes means the resin is worn out or that the softener needs replacing.

Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not Gemline/NuGen support or a repair contractor. This page summarizes the NuGen Fusion XT manual (footer revision 5/10/2012, distributor-hosted copy reviewed October 8, 2026). The internal repairs it lists are service work. Use this page to identify the code and prepare a useful service request.

Gemline error code table

The manual’s troubleshooting table, printed pages 16–17, lists four motor-position faults. The code you see depends on the control board’s display format, which is why one fault has two or three names.

Code shown What the manual says it means Possible causes the manual lists
E1, Err-1001, Err-101 Control unable to sense motor movement Motor not fully inserted to engage the pinion, broken or disconnected motor wires; PC board not snapped into the drive bracket; missing reduction gears
E2, Err-1002, Err-102 Motor ran too short, could not find the next cycle position, and stalled Foreign material lodged in the control valve; mechanical binding; main drive gear too tight; improper voltage to the PC board
E3, Err-1003, Err-103 Motor ran too long and could not find the next cycle position Motor failure during a regeneration; foreign matter on the piston and stack assemblies causing drag; drive bracket not snapped in
Err-1004, Err-104 Motor ran too long and timed out trying to reach the home position Drive bracket not snapped in properly, so the reduction gears and drive gear do not mesh

A pattern runs through the table: E1 points first at the motor’s electrical connection and seating, E2 at something resisting movement, and E3 and Err-1004 at the drive train not engaging properly or wear and debris on the piston. That is a starting point for the technician, not a diagnosis. The table does not rank the causes by likelihood.

What does “resynchronize” mean on a Fusion XT?

Every code row ends with the same recovery step after the physical cause is corrected: press NEXT and REGEN together for 3 seconds to resynchronize the software with the piston position, or disconnect the power supply from the PC board for 5 seconds and reconnect it. This is in the owners manual, printed page 16.

Resynchronizing does not open the valve, so it is a reasonable single observation step for an owner. It is not a repair. If the code clears and the next regeneration completes, write down the date and code in case it returns. If the code returns, or appears again during the next cycle, the cause in the table is still present. Repeated resets can hide a pattern the technician needs to see.

Which codes need a technician?

All four, if they come back. The manual’s corrections for these codes are inside the control valve: reseating the motor, snapping in the PC board or drive bracket, replacing reduction gears, loosening the main drive gear, removing foreign material, and replacing piston and stack assemblies. Those steps require the valve to be bypassed and depressurized and are not owner maintenance.

There are two exceptions where the owner’s check matters most:

  • Power. E2 lists improper voltage as a cause. The manual’s site requirements, printed page 5, call for a 115/120-volt, 60 Hz uninterrupted outlet, and the troubleshooting table separately lists an adapter plugged into an outlet controlled by a light switch, a tripped breaker or GFCI, and power outages. Confirm the adapter is in a live, unswitched outlet and note whether there was a recent outage. Do not open the electronics.
  • Recent service. E1 and Err-1004 list a PC board or drive bracket that is not snapped in. If the code appeared right after someone worked on the valve, tell the company that did the work.

What to do while the code is showing

If water is running continuously to the drain, or the valve stalled mid-cycle, put the softener in bypass so the house still has water while you wait for service. The manual’s bypass valve section, printed pages 6–7, shows the four handle positions. In bypass, both handles point to the center of the bypass valve and untreated water goes to the house. Do not use the diagnostic or shut-off positions as a workaround; they do different jobs.

Expect hard water while bypassed. That is normal and does not mean the resin is damaged.

Problems that look like an error code but are not

Several Fusion XT faults show no code at all. They have their own rows in the manual’s table on printed pages 14–16:

Symptom Causes in the manual Owner check
Display blank No power at outlet, adapter unplugged, improper supply, failed adapter or PC board Outlet live, adapter seated
Time of day flashing or wrong Power outage; switched outlet; tripped breaker or GFCI; depleted backup battery if fitted Reset the clock; note the outage
Water runs to drain constantly Power outage during regeneration (the control finishes the remaining time when power returns); damaged seal/stack; piston failure; drive cap not tightened Wait for a post-outage cycle to finish; otherwise bypass and call
No regeneration when REGEN is held Broken drive gear, drive cap assembly or piston rod; PC board Service call
Regenerates manually but not automatically Bypass position, meter disconnected or stalled, incorrect programming, meter or PC board fault Compare bypass handles with the normal-operation diagram

After a power outage, the manual says to reset the time of day and notes that a backup battery, if the PC board has one, may be depleted. The drive-assembly drawing on printed page 18 identifies that battery as a 3-volt lithium coin cell, type 2032. See our Fusion XT parts guide for the other order numbers listed in the manual.

If the problem is hard water rather than a code, use the Gemline not-softening checklist instead. Settings such as hardness, day override and regeneration time are covered in the Gemline manual and settings guide.

Does the code apply to every Fusion XT model?

The manual covers XT-48, XT-60, XT-70, XT-70ER, XT-90 and XT-32C in one troubleshooting table and does not split the codes by model. The cabinet XT-32C has its own front-cover and drive-assembly page with a different PC board order number (printed page 19), so give the technician the exact model and a photo of the control. A Gemline-branded filter or RO unit is a different product, and these codes do not apply to it. Our Gemline brand research separates the product families.

Send a service request with the code

Include:

  1. Model and serial number from the label, plus a photo of the control showing the code.
  2. The exact code text, including whether it reads E1, Err-1001 or Err-101.
  3. When it appeared: during a scheduled regeneration, after a power outage, or after recent service.
  4. What you did: whether you resynchronized once, and whether the code came back.
  5. Current state: bypassed or in service, any water running to drain, and any leak.

Ask the company to name the cause they found, the part replaced and whether a completed regeneration was observed afterwards. Before paying for parts, ask whether the repair falls under the manufacturer’s parts coverage. Our Gemline warranty guide explains the published terms and the labor and freight exclusions. Frequently asked questions

What does E1 mean on a Gemline water softener?

The NuGen Fusion XT manual defines E1 (also Err-1001 or Err-101) as the control being unable to sense motor movement. It lists a motor not fully engaged or with broken wires, a PC board not snapped into the drive bracket, or missing reduction gears as possible causes.

How do I clear an error code on a Fusion XT softener?

The manual says to correct the listed cause, then press NEXT and REGEN together for 3 seconds, or disconnect power from the PC board for 5 seconds, to resynchronize the piston position. If the code returns, the cause is still present and the valve needs service.

Does an E3 code mean my softener needs new resin?

No. The manual ties E3 to the control valve’s drive: motor failure during regeneration, debris on the piston and stack, or a drive bracket not snapped in. It is not a resin or capacity fault.

Can I keep using water while the Fusion XT shows an error?

Yes, if you place the bypass valve in its bypass position, with both handles pointing to the center. The house then receives untreated water until the valve is repaired.
