Direct answer: For an SS1 or SS4 matching SpringWell’s currently linked app-based installation guide, set the unit clock, a low-use regeneration time and measured hardness first. The manual gives different capacity and brine-refill values for SS1 and SS4. Do not apply them to SS+, FutureSoft, a well-water filter or an unidentified replacement control. Photograph the original settings before changing anything.
Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not SpringWell support. This guide summarizes the manufacturer PDF and support articles reviewed October 7, 2026. The PDF is undated; being linked today does not prove a new controller revision or universal applicability to every installed SS head.
Confirm the model, electronic head and app together
The current SS product download shows a powered electronic head and phone-based programming. On printed page 13, its text tells owners to search for the SpringWell app, while its screenshots show Legacy View. A separate manufacturer support article also names Legacy View. Confirm the app and controller your own equipment requires; do not install an arbitrary similarly named app or assume the pictured interface is current for a replacement head.
Read the tank label and retain the invoice/manual. SS1 and SS4 have explicit numbered setup sections in this guide. The cover also names SS+, but the reviewed programming pages do not provide its own capacity/refill row. That missing row is a reason to obtain matched instructions, not to extrapolate SS4 settings upward.
FutureSoft is a conditioner without this salt-softener programming job. If you are unsure which tank does what, the SpringWell comparison and brand research distinguish SS, FutureSoft and filtration equipment.
Record the current configuration before editing
Make a record with these fields:
- Full equipment model, serial number and photo of the electronic head.
- Manual identity, app name/version and which device you selected.
- Clock, AM/PM, regeneration start time and water-hardness setting.
- Raw-water hardness, test method, units and date.
- Existing reserve, override, resin-capacity and refill values.
- Salt type, reason for the change and a treated-water hardness result afterward.
This record separates the water test from the values entered into the controller. It also helps support determine whether a previous installer changed an advanced value deliberately. Do not use a screenshot’s example number as your property’s water-test result.
Set the clock and regeneration start time
For the matched interface on printed page 13, steps 58–65:
- Open the confirmed app and select the correct softener device.
- Open the unit’s time-of-day tile. The illustrated confirmation copies the phone’s time to the unit; confirm the phone’s own time first.
- Open the regeneration-time tile and choose a period when water is normally not being used. The manual illustrates a 2 a.m. default, not a schedule suitable for every household.
- Open the water-hardness tile and enter the value from the property’s hardness test, in the units shown by the matched interface.
The pictured interface shows hardness in GPG, grains per gallon. If your test reports another unit, convert correctly before entering it; our water hardness calculator helps with that record. The time of day for regeneration is separate from how much metered water triggers the need for it. A clock correction is not proof that the softener’s brine system or metering works.
Keep SS1 and SS4 setup values separate
The following values are the manufacturer guide’s installation setup, on printed pages 14–15. They are not general troubleshooting adjustments or independently verified salt-efficiency targets:
| Matched setup item | SS1 section | SS4 section |
|---|---|---|
| Regeneration day override | 14 days | 14 days |
| Reserve capacity | 10% | 10% |
| Resin grains capacity entry | 32, representing 32,000 | 48, representing 48,000 |
| Brine refill | 8 minutes | 10 minutes |
Source: numbered steps 66–81. Confirm these against the actual supplied valve and commissioning record before correcting an advanced value. The guide’s SS1 and SS4 sections are explicit; it does not establish an SS+ row.
A 14-day override is not a promise that the system regenerates exactly every two weeks. Likewise, a 32 or 48 capacity entry is not a salt-dose performance table. Increasing capacity to delay regeneration or changing refill time to save salt alters assumptions that support must assess; it does not increase the tank’s resin or establish that the remaining salt dose restores it correctly.
Potassium chloride has its own source boundary
SpringWell’s potassium-chloride support article, updated December 19, 2023, says to increase the Legacy View Water Hardness setting by 5 gpg when using potassium chloride. That is this source’s controller-specific compensation, not a 25% rule to import from another brand and not a claim that measured hardness increased.
Before changing regenerant, confirm that the installed controller and current instructions match that guidance. Keep measured raw hardness, salt type and the programmed compensation in separate fields. The salt-selection article recommends softener-specific pellets; it is not a reason to put table salt or regenerant into a FutureSoft tank.
A manual regeneration is a specific action
The end of the installation guide, printed page 15, uses the menu’s immediate-regeneration command followed by confirmation. The guide warns that this commissioning cycle takes 90 minutes and water should not be used during that period. Keep that warning with the command; do not treat 90 minutes as a universal diagnosis threshold for every controller or optional cycle configuration.
For an already installed system, ask support whether that recovery action is appropriate for the actual symptom. Do not force repeated cycles, shorten stages or change advanced values to remove an error. If water stays hard, the not-softening guide helps record bypass, salt and test observations before service.
Verify the result, not just the saved number
After an ordinary supported change or completed recovery cycle, record hardness at a known treated cold-water outlet using the same test method. Preserve the test’s units, sampling point and timing. A normal-looking app dashboard is not a water-quality test.
Send the recorded settings and observations to SpringWell or your installer if the interface differs, the selected unit cannot be identified, an error appears, the tank overflows or measured performance remains poor. Internal valve work, drain changes and repair procedures need the exact equipment instructions. Our water softener service guide helps compare the proposed work without preselecting a failed part.

Frequently asked questions
Which hardness value should I enter for my SpringWell softener?
Use the property hardness test in the units required by the matched interface; the reviewed screenshots show GPG. Keep any supported salt-type compensation separate from measured hardness. An example screen is not a measurement for your home.
Can I use the SS4 refill setting for an SS1?
The reviewed numbered setup steps give SS1 an eight-minute brine refill and SS4 ten minutes, with different capacity entries. Confirm the actual valve and commissioning record rather than transferring values between models.
Does the reviewed manual provide complete SS+ programming values?
No. Its cover names SS+, but the reviewed app-programming sections give distinct SS1 and SS4 capacity/refill values only. Obtain the setup instructions matched to the installed SS+ controller instead of extrapolating.
Should I use SpringWell or Legacy View to program the unit?
The reviewed PDF text names SpringWell while its screenshots show Legacy View, and the potassium-chloride support article also names Legacy View. Confirm the required app and controller with SpringWell before following a similar-looking interface.
