Direct answer: Kinetico water softeners are made by Kinetico Incorporated, the company that designs them. It is headquartered in Newbury, Ohio, where it built its headquarters and manufacturing plant in 1983. Kinetico has been owned by the Sweden-based Axel Johnson Group since 2006, and its website footer describes it as “an Axel Johnson Inc company.” Kinetico does not sell softeners through big-box stores or its own web shop. Systems are sold, installed and serviced by authorized, independent Kinetico dealers, and the residential warranty applies only to systems sold by one of those dealers.
Publisher boundary: Water System Guide is an independent research publisher, not a Kinetico dealer or affiliate. This page is based on Kinetico’s own About Us page, fact sheet, dealer page, owner’s manual and residential warranty, reviewed October 15, 2026. We have not visited Kinetico’s facilities. The fact sheet is a 2016 document, and where it differs from the current website we say so.
The company: Kinetico Incorporated
Kinetico’s About Us page gives a timeline (Kinetico About Us):
| Year | Event, as Kinetico describes it |
|---|---|
| 1970 | “Engineers Bill Prior and Jim Kewley form Kinetico in a 40-foot by 40-foot former tire shop.” |
| 1970s | “Kinetico commits to distributing products through local dealers who understand water chemistry and provide end-to-end service – a model that still exists today.” |
| 1982 | “Annual water softener sales grow to 17,000.” |
| 1983 | “Construction of the Kinetico headquarters and manufacturing plant begins on a 170-acre campus in Northeast Ohio.” |
| 1997 | A 25,000-square-foot expansion adds a research and development wing and analytical laboratory. |
| 2006 | “Kinetico is acquired by Sweden-based Axel Johnson Group.” |
| 2012 | “Three Kinetico water softener models are named Best Buys by Consumers Digest.” |
| 2017 | Kinetico “expands reverse osmosis filtration expertise by acquiring Nimbus Water Systems.” |
| Today | “2,130 associates serving more than 100 countries.” |
The founders’ idea is the thing Kinetico is still known for: “In 1970, our founders pioneered water treatment systems powered by the energy of moving water, not electricity.” The fact sheet says the same: “Kinetico gained notoriety for pioneering the development of water treatment systems that are powered by the energy of moving water, not electricity” (Kinetico fact sheet).
Who owns Kinetico?
Kinetico’s fact sheet explains the ownership: “In 2006, Kinetico was acquired by Axel Johnson Inc., the North American operating arm of the Sweden-based Axel Johnson Group. Axel Johnson is a private company with interests in the energy and environmental sectors” (fact sheet). The footer on Kinetico’s current website reads “Kinetico Incorporated, an Axel Johnson Inc company” (About Us).
So there is no separate contract manufacturer behind the brand name. The company that owns the Kinetico trademark designs the softeners, and its owner is a private group rather than a public company.
Where Kinetico is based
The fact sheet says Kinetico is “headquartered in Newbury, Ohio” and has offices in “Canada, the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Belgium, and Suwanee, Georgia.” The 2025 Premier XP owner’s manual lists the same headquarters and adds Spain: “Kinetico also has offices in Suwanee, Georgia; Canada; France; Denmark; Belgium; Spain; and the United Kingdom” (Premier XP manual, PDF page 4).
The About Us timeline places the headquarters and manufacturing plant on “a 170-acre campus in Northeast Ohio,” built from 1983. The Premier XP sell sheet carries a “Made in the USA” mark, but we could not confirm a current public URL for that sheet, so we do not rely on it. Kinetico’s pages do not say which parts, if any, are sourced from other suppliers.
How big Kinetico is
Kinetico’s About Us page says “more than 1 million Kinetico systems treat over 100 million gallons of water each day in the U.S. and around the world - even Buckingham Palace.” It counts “2,130 associates serving more than 100 countries” (About Us). The 2016 fact sheet said “nearly 100 countries,” so the reach figure has grown or been restated since then.
The product range is wider than softeners. The fact sheet lists water softeners, drinking water (reverse osmosis) systems, carbon filters, backwashing filters, aeration systems, iron filters, neutralizers, scale reduction systems, combination filter/softeners, dechlorination, arsenic reduction, chloramine reduction, sulfur filters and whole-house membrane systems (fact sheet).
The fact sheet singles out one non-softener product: “Kinetico’s K5 Drinking Water Station® is a reverse osmosis system that can adapt to a homeowner’s changing water conditions and needs.” The residential warranty links the two products. It gives the K5 10 years on its reverse osmosis membrane “only when installed following a Kinetico Water Softener,” against four years when it is installed separately (residential limited warranty).
How Kinetico softeners are sold: authorized dealers only
This is the part that matters most to a buyer. Kinetico has used local dealers since the 1970s, and its About Us page says that model “still exists today.” Its dealer page describes “a winning relationship with its diverse network of professional independent dealerships and distributors,” and offers dealers “sales, advertising and technical support” (dealer opportunities page).
For a homeowner, that means:
- Prices come from the dealer. The softener pages invite you to “Get a Quick Quote” or “Schedule Your Free Water Test” (Signature Series page), and the softeners page says your “local Kinetico dealer will contact you to schedule your water test” (Kinetico water softeners). Kinetico does not publish retail prices for its softeners. See our Kinetico water softener cost guide.
- Dealer sale is a warranty condition. The residential warranty says “Your system must be sold to you by an authorized Kinetico dealer and installed, operated and serviced in accordance with Kinetico’s recommendations” (residential limited warranty).
- The dealer registers the system. “Your authorized Kinetico dealer must register your equipment with Kinetico Incorporated within 30 days of the installation date.”
- Service goes through the dealer. “For service under this Limited Warranty, contact your authorized Kinetico dealer.” The owner’s manuals repeat this throughout. For example, the Premier XP manual says hardness adjustments “should always be made by an authorized Kinetico service representative” (Premier XP manual, PDF page 14).
Kinetico’s site also lists a 24-hour support line, 1-800-944-9283, and a customer service email (Signature Series page).
The dealers are independent businesses. Kinetico’s lead form says you agree to receive communications “from Kinetico or your Authorized, Independent Kinetico Dealer.” Prices, installation terms and service quality can therefore differ from dealer to dealer, even though the equipment and the manufacturer warranty are the same.
What Kinetico’s softeners have in common
Every current Kinetico softener family on its website is non-electric. Kinetico says its softeners “use non-electric technology ensuring there are no timers, computers or other electrical components to repair or replace,” and that “you will still have soft water during power outages” (Kinetico water softeners).
The owner’s manual explains the design. Kinetico systems “have a built-in water meter” and regenerate “on demand” based on actual use. They use “countercurrent regeneration” with soft water, and a twin-tank design so that “when one tank needs to regenerate, service automatically switches to the other tank” (Premier XP manual, PDF page 7). Our Kinetico regeneration guide covers what that means for owners.
Kinetico currently presents two softener families: Premier XP, labeled “best seller - highest rated,” with a 10-year warranty, and Signature Series, labeled “classic design - reliable performance,” with a 5-year warranty (Kinetico water softeners). Our Kinetico water softener models compared page lays out the models, and the Kinetico warranty guide covers the terms.
Certification
Kinetico says its softeners are “third-party certified by the WQA.” The Premier XP manual is more specific: Premier XP softeners “are tested and certified by WQA against the requirements of NSF/ANSI Standard 44 for softener performance and chemical reduction of barium and radium 226/228,” as well as NSF/ANSI 372 and CSA B483.1. It also notes the exceptions: “S750 XP, Q850 OD XP w/Chloraban®, Q850 OD XP with Sulfaban™ and Q950 OD XP are not Tested and Certified by WQA” (Premier XP manual, PDF page 17).
Who makes Kinetico versus who sells it
If you are comparing quotes, it helps to separate three roles:
- Manufacturer and warrantor: Kinetico Incorporated, Newbury, Ohio. Its residential warranty starts “from the date of original system installation” and covers parts, not “freight or labor charges.”
- Parent company: Axel Johnson Inc., part of the Axel Johnson Group.
- Seller, installer and service provider: your local authorized, independent Kinetico dealer.
When a quote says “Kinetico,” ask which dealer is behind it and confirm that it is authorized. Otherwise the warranty condition above may not be met.
